Simulations of the Velocity Dependence of the Friction Force

چکیده
The motion of an elastic body over a rough surface is simulated in one dimension using Newtonian dynamics. We drive the body by prescribing a constant velocity. We extract the friction force from the work done by the applied force in order to maintain the motion of the body. A positive amount of work is needed because energy is converted into the internal elastic degrees of freedom of the body. The velocity dependence of the friction force is studied as function of the roughness of the surface and the elastic properties of the mobile body. We pay special attention to the low velocity limit. It is shown that the friction force goes to a finite value as the velocity goes to zero when the substrate is sufficiently rough to induce elastic instabilities. For smooth substrates, where elasitc instabilities are absent, the friction force goes to zero when the velocity goes to zero. PACS numbers: 46.30.Pa, 81.40.Pq, 68.10.Et, 05.70.L

Investigation of the Forming Force in Torsion Extrusion Process of Aluminum Alloy 1050
In this paper, torsion extrusion (TE) process on 1050 aluminum alloy was investigated by simulation as a severe plastic deformation (SPD) method and the effects of friction coefficient, angular velocity of the rotating die and punch speed on maximum punch force were studied. A finite element (FE) model was developed to simulate the TE process via DEFORM software. The FE results were validated co...
متن کاملVelocity dependent friction laws in contact mode atomic force microscopy.
Friction forces in the tip-sample contact govern the dynamics of contact mode atomic force microscopy. In ambient conditions typical contact radii between tip and sample are in the order of a few nanometers. In order to account for the large interaction area the dynamics of contact mode atomic force microscope (AFM) is investigated under the assumption of a multi-asperity contact interface betw...
متن کاملDependence of friction on roughness, velocity, and temperature.
We study the dependence of friction on surface roughness, sliding velocity, and temperature. Expanding on the classic treatment of Greenwood and Williamson, we show that the fractal nature of a surface has little influence on the real area of contact and the static friction coefficient. A simple scaling argument shows that the static friction exhibits a weak anomaly mu ~ A(0)(-chi/4), where A0 ...

Alkylsilane monolayer films are used in the fabrication of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) as anti-stiction coatings. Recently, these films are also being considered as anti-friction coating for MEMS parts that operate under conditions of friction, such as gears, motors, etc. Study of frictional behaviour of these films is of significant interest from the performance point of view. In thi...

In the present paper, discrete element method (DEM) is used to study wave propagation phenomenon in granular soils. The effect of factors such as coefficient of friction, frequency, normal stiffness and soil gradation on the wave velocity is studied. Using the wall motion based on the sinusoidal function is the method of loading used in this simulation, through which the pressure wave is transf...
